The Route

Exploration: We’re visiting coastal towns and remote islands, soaking in different cultures, and learning to appreciate the natural beauty around us.
Bonding: Without the usual distractions, we’re finding time for conversations, creating new family traditions, and simply enjoying being together.
Personal Growth: Each of us is discovering new things about ourselves—what we love, what we’re passionate about, and how we want to live our lives when we return. We are focusing on &#8220;learning by doing&#8221; as well as following a homeschool program for the girls to change things up.

The route along the East Coast of the US is primarily driven by weather. In the fall, the tradeoff is staying North long enough to remain out of the primary hurricane zones Norfolk, VA and south, through the end of October while getting south quick enough not to “freeze your gazorkas off”. Many sailboat insurance companies will increase premiums or will potentially not insure your boat when south of Norfolk prior to November 1st. This results in the primary dates shown for the southbound route.

January – April are ideal timeframes for exploring the Bahamas. Georgetown hosts a fun Cruising Regatta where a couple hundred cruisers (many with kids) gather for some activities.
